17.6mm Swiss Model 1817/42 Artillery model percussion musket. No.: 2078. Almost a schutzen style stock, Barrel octagonal to round, with Cantonal marks to breech. Old and repaired cracks to stock – look to be stabilized, missing nipple. Converted, probably Cantonally, since it has a flat hammer, to percussion with the 1842 programme, from earlier flintlocks. Cantons had considerable leeway early in the century, with many privately made arms being carried, but conforming to Cantonal calibre. Carried by troops of the Cantonal artillery park – possibly Bern or Bernese Oberland. It has all the appearances of a private purchase rather than standard issue arm, with embellished trigger-guard and octagonal to round barrel; one can easily envisage the owner carrying his own musket rather than an issue arm
