AP130 - .28” Massachusetts Arms Co. cased revolver.

A rare cased Maynard Tape-primer pocket revolver. Round, rifled, 28 cal barrel with foresight; engraved, six-shot convex faced cylinder!!! model, grip strap marked "MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS", frame engraved with floral motifs and marked "MAYNARD'S PATENT SEP. 22 1845"; the right side can be opened to insert the roll of primers; the tape wheel being cycled by hammer cocking. It has wooden grip scales. Working mechanism (the cylinder is locked only in one direction when the hammer is fully cocked. In a wooden case with burgundy velvet lining, complete with tools and key.

 

Made 1851-1857 (1860 for other models) approximate production of only 2500-3000 in .28 and .31 calibre; of these, approximately only hand rotated account for approximately 900 examples in .28 calibre. The Massachusetts Arms Co were successfully sued by Colt for patent infringements over cylinder rotation mechanism, hence redesigning of original Wesson & Leavitt revolver. These revolvers used by John Brown in 1857.
