AP165 - Large calibre Pepperbox pistol

An unusually larger calibre and dimensioned 54-bore four-barrelled percussion pepperbox by Reilly. The four barrel configuration with such a large calibre is very very unusual, as well as coming from a maker of repute, as Reilly: it oozes quality! The 3½” barrels have much original colour; border and scroll engraved colour hardened, signed rounded action, chevron engraved bar hammer, sliding safety, border and scroll engraved trigger guard, chequered wooden grip, vacant white metal escutcheon, the stepped but with foliate engraved trap and traces of original colour, in its case with commensurate accessories: nipple key, fluted body pistol sized powder flask, correct pattern bullet mould (WD – William Davies) with integral ram rod to one leg of the handle and lidded compartment with bone lifter. The fit is excellent, indicating that this is not composed. The address of E M. Reilly & Co with 502 New Oxford Street dates this pepperbox as between 1848 and 1869. A scarce configuration and retaining good traces of original finish over all.
