AP176 -Tranter Double trigger percussion revolver 2nd Model 54 bore.

Tranter's patent 2nd model trigger-cocking 54-bore percussion revolver retailed by A Clayton, Southampton. Serial No.: 3380T. This example of a second model is circa 1855; fitted with the detachable 2nd model rammer (with fixed head) and oval stamped “TRANTERS PATENT” patent, Y spring safety (actuated by cocking with the lower trigger); lower “cocking” trigger with oval patent stamp but unnumbered). Blued octagonal 6” barrel, dove-tailed fore-sight, engraved band at muzzle, standing notch rear-sight to the rear of the solid border-engraved top-strap, borderline and scroll engraved frame, plain five-shot cylinder with borderline engraving and a rope-twist band to leading edge. This trigger-cocking action has the spur-less hammer; the cleaned of finish rammer is, correctly for this model, detachable with TRANTERS PATENT in oval Tranter's patent rammer.

Being double-trigger, it has the exposed cocking trigger below the guard. The grip is chequered walnut (still well defined) one-piece semi saw-handled grip with flared pommel and moulded iron cap. Whilst there are some losses to colour, it retains strong traces of original finish.

Alfred Clayton had premises initially in Lymington and then Southampton when he moved there from Lymington, trading between 1855 and 1867,

Mechanically very good working order and bright, clean bore.
