AP182 - Rigby of Dublin Flintlock overcoat pistol
16 bore Rigby Flintlock overcoat pistol. Damascus 6” barrel, ovoid with flattened top, with  DUBLIN engraved upon it. It has a flat stepped lockplate with W&J RIGBY centred, throat-hole flat cock, semi-waterproof pan and roller frizzen. The barrel has what I take to be Birmingham Private Proof (it was still quite Wild West at the time with varying degrees of observance of proof Rules; and not too unusual.), with vestiges of old salt and pepper to it, and captive rammer. The stock is generally clean with a smooth brass butt-cap; the grip shape, size and style of the butt is typical Rigby-narrow.
 
The firm of Rigby was established by John Rigby senior in Dublin circa 1775, taking into partnership his eldest son William in 1816, thereafter trading as John Rigby and Son. Following John Rigby senior’s death in 1818, William took-in younger brother John Jason Rigby and hence trading as W&J RIGBY. At this period they were working from 24 Suffolk Street, Dublin; they later exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and took-on London premises in 1866 with grandson John Rigby.
A well known and considered gun makers who produced many high quality guns and later, quite exceptional as well as working rifles.
