Damascus 29½“ barrels, even the ramrod pipes are damascus! London Proof. Foliate engraved locks, hammers & tang with “E M REILLY & Co to both lockplates, and to wide flat top-rib, with London address. Twin leaf cape rearsight. Straight hand stock with old, brass reinforce at four quarters to old cracked wrist; an extremely strong repair well done with flush fitting as was relatively common at this time. Chequered wrist. Heavy brass-tipped wood ramrod. Smooth around the forend, showing ample signs of carry wear. This type of rifle was popular in the colonies, particularly South Africa and with the Boers, who had a firearm for hunting feather or fur, and for self-defence. Probably circa 1850-70, a muzzle loader being more certain of ammunition than a breechloader with specific cartridge.
