AR596 - Model 1866 .50-70 (GOVT.) Trapdoor Springfield.

The second Allin conversion Model 1866 .50-70 (GOVT.) Trapdoor. There is a number(64) just visible on the tang, behind the breech, although the 1866 models were not serial numbered, so I assume this to be a vestigial date (1864) . Converted from an 1861 Springfield percussion rifle, it has a lock dated 1862, the conversion most likely in 1867. The barrel of 36 ¾” has been cleaned externally, with traces of old but light surface pitting. The barrel is correct as having been reamed out and lined to .50” with a bright, clean and crisp bore. The block is simply patina’d. Correct blade fore-sight, battle rear-sight with flip-up ranging blade. The flip-open trapdoor action marked '1866' (Model designation not manufacture or conversion date with with model) fixed via a brazed and screwed mount to breech-end. The lock is signed 'SPRINGFIELD' with bevel edge and dated (1862) tail, walnut full-stock with iron furniture including three barrel-bands and cup-ended clearing rod; I suspect the rod is a later replacement, being the pattern fitted to the Model 1865. Most Models 1866 were made during 1867 with a few more in 1868 and 1869 for US service use. A further 3100 were made for France during 1871 Franco-Prussian War. Minor dings to stock and a faint inspectors mark; there is some damage to fore-end on the left hand side just behind the top barrel band.
