AR604 - Victorian Military flint musket: Brown Bess
Queen Victoria - one of the last flint muskets – Brown Bess - prior to the general introduction of percussion arms. Probably an Enrolled Pensioners Musket of 1843 pattern; 39½” barrel 0.75” calibre. Round no-tailed flat lock with double band border of 1839 pattern, marked TOWER and Crown V.R. over TOWER , and Board of Ordnance mark crown/arrow. Ordnance inspection mark and Enfield inspection marks of circa 1840; stamped: WD & Crows Foot to butt, next to “Barnett, gunmakers, London” in oval – possibly as “setter-up”: Barnett refurbished 1880 muskets in 1837-1838. Top of the barrel marked to 42nd Regiment – the Black Watch. Round-ended tang with apron to wrist; parallel shaped pan of post 1810; India pattern side plate and trigger guard. Metalwork appears uncleaned; generally good overall but some damage/splits to forend. Metal ramrod. Clean and sound bore. Comes with a later American style sling.
