AR607 - 50-70 Model 1866 Trapdoor Springfield.
A US issue Trapdoor Springfield rifle Model 1866, the 2nd Pattern Allen conversion to breechloading. This muzzle-loading to breechloading is based on an 1864 dated Model 1863 Springfield rifled musket. Only about 50,000 of this model made (not many in military terms), mainly during 1867; as surplus they were bought-in by Remington for overseas sales, with approximately 3000 assembled from parts for France during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The breechblock is correctly marked "1866" with eagles head and the lockplate is marked "U.S.” and SPRINGFIELD" with an eagle, dated 1864. The stock is clean overall as is the metalwork. The original full-length cleaning rod is present! Bore and the rifling are in very good condition with a few light blemishes. The Trapdoor in original calibre is not too easy to find and this model is less common with comparatively few made and many later scrapped and sold as surplus.
