AP126 - Augustin lock Model 1851 Kavelleriepistole

A very seldom seen Imperial Austrian issue Model 1851 Augustin-system tube-lock pistol. Calibre 17mm (15-bore) cavalry pistol:  'Kavelleriepistole Muster 1851' with original Augustin-system tube-lock pistol. The correct pattern flat and chamfered edged lock dated 1854; of regulation pattern, cleaned overall, old pitting remains patchy, the bore of the 250mm barrel internally a shade dull throughout. Old crack at butt. The Augustin tube-lock was only adopted by Imperial Austria as a military arm; its other main use was a a sporting gun, particularly for wildfowlers, since the strength of the tube ignition ensured ignition of the main charge: in any form, the Augustin tube-lock is seldom seen as was often converted to other ignition systems. Developed from the Console lock and system, the Augustin lock did not last long in service being soon superseded by percussion cap. Augustin lock arms were made as pistol and long musket with many converted to flintlock – an easy conversion and sold-off to the Eastern trade for native use. Many superseded Austrian arms were bought-in for the US Civil War, with many re-stocked significant numbers in American black walnut. This particular pistol reportedly was bought on the Eastern seaboard of the US and has the darker than normal Austrian stock. An example of a rare firearm.
