First World War "ad memoriam"  embroidered picture. Showing an imperial Austrian soldier set on a cross-stitched background with embroidered text: “Maria Hilf uns” over “zum Sieg und Frieden”, above Virgin Mary and child and  with Imperial Austrian and Imperial German flags either side, the photograph of the unfortunate soldier (killed  1916) above” Im Welt Kreig 1914-1916”, and surrounded by portraits of the emperors and kings of the Central Powers, each in an embroidered surround. The private soldier is wearing the simplified Waffenrock jacket and carries a Werndl bayonet, so I’d estimate the photograph was taken 1915 or early 1916, when shortages of arms were beginning to bite. There are impressed coats of arms of Imperial Germany and Imperial Austria in the grey mounting board. Some damage to the frame. Glazed. Frame 51cm x 61cm; embroidered picture: 28cm x 38cm
